How Parents Can Track Learning Progress Beyond Marks

Marks can show part of a studentโ€™s progress, but they do not tell the whole story. Parents can also look at understanding, effort, confidence and the ability to solve new questions.

Look at everyday learning

Check whether the child can explain a lesson in their own words. Notice if they complete work with less help over time. Also, review notebooks and see whether mistakes are being corrected.

Use regular check-ins

Ask simple questions: What did you learn today? Which topic felt easy? What needs more practice? These conversations can help children share their needs. Keep the tone supportive, not like an exam.

Set clear goals

Choose one small goal for the week, such as practising fractions or writing clearer answers. Review it together at the end of the week. If progress is slow, adjust the plan and seek help when needed.
